Tips from local experts:

  • Dress in insulated, windproof layers and bring warm boots and gloves — temperatures can drop well below freezing during winter nights.
  • Bring a camera with manual controls and a tripod; bring spare camera batteries (cold reduces battery life) — the guide will assist with basic long-exposure settings.
  • If you want pickup, confirm your exact pickup location (one of the listed Ivalo/Inari properties) in advance; otherwise arrive 10 minutes early at the meeting point to ensure timely departure.

Why this experience

Chase the northern lights across the Arctic wilderness in a silent, electric vehicle that leaves no engine noise or exhaust to disturb the dark sky. This is aurora hunting refined — your guide tracks clear skies in real time, positions you away from light pollution, and uses an electric car that means you're moving through the landscape without disrupting the experience itself. Arctic Inari in winter is one of the world's most reliable aurora zones, and an electric car keeps the focus on the lights rather than the journey between viewing spots.

Before you go

  • Best time: Autumn through early spring, when dark skies return and aurora activity is most reliable
  • Budget: Check the booking widget for current pricing.
  • Difficulty: Easy. You're in a vehicle most of the time, though you'll step out to watch and photograph the lights in extreme cold.
  • What to bring: Thermals, insulated parka, waterproof snow pants, warm hat (covers ears), gloves, insulated boots, hand warmers, camera with stable tripod (if you're serious about photos)
  • Getting there: Meet your guide in Inari village. Specific meeting location and time provided at booking.
  • Accessibility: The vehicle offers protection from the elements, but the experience requires standing outside in sub-zero temperatures for extended periods. Discuss any mobility or cold-tolerance concerns with the operator.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the aurora tour?

Aurora tours typically run 4–6 hours, starting in the evening and running into the night. The exact timing depends on weather and aurora forecasts. Your operator will confirm the schedule at booking.

What's included in this itinerary?

This itinerary on TheNextGuide includes a guided aurora hunt by electric car with a local Inari operator. You'll travel to multiple viewing locations based on real-time weather and aurora forecasts, viewing the lights from remote Arctic spots with minimal light pollution. The guide provides local knowledge of the best locations and optimal timing. Check the booking widget for what's included — typically transportation, guide, and sometimes hot beverages.

What if there's no aurora?

The aurora is a natural phenomenon and never guaranteed, even in peak season. Most operators offer a reschedule option if the lights don't appear. Confirm your operator's no-aurora policy when you book.

Is the electric car actually warm?

Yes. The vehicle is fully heated, and you'll spend most of the tour inside, moving between viewing spots. You step out to watch and photograph when the lights appear. The cold is manageable in proper gear.

Can I photograph the aurora?

Absolutely. Bring a camera with manual settings and a sturdy tripod. Your guide will help with positioning and can advise on camera settings. Professional-quality photos are possible with the right equipment, though the guide's priority is your experience rather than your photos.
