Itinerary
Day 1
Full-day guided exploration of Sultanahmet district with included lunch, door-to-door pickup and a certified English/French guide. The order of visits follows the historic route through the old city.
Topkapı Palace (or Basilica Cistern on Tuesdays)
Visit the heart of the Ottoman court: Topkapı Palace (note: closed on Tuesdays; on Tuesdays the visit is replaced with a stop at Basilica Cistern). The guide will provide an accessible overview and skip-the-line access where possible.
Tips from local experts:
- Topkapı has uneven floors and steps; bring low-heeled, supportive shoes and allow extra time for slow-paced movement.
- If your tour falls on a Tuesday we will visit Basilica Cistern instead — the guide will confirm the change that morning.
- Public restrooms are available near the palace entrance; carry any needed medication as there may be short queues to facilities.
Leather Shopping Stop — Bab-ı Ali
Short shopping stop in the Bab-ı Ali area to view traditional Turkish leather goods crafted locally. Time allocated for browsing and light purchases.
Tips from local experts:
- Keep purchases small and light if you plan to continue walking; larger items will be boxed for later hotel delivery by many shops.
- Ask shop staff for clear information on return or exchange policies before buying — receipts and clear labeling help if you need assistance later.
- If you have limited mobility, request seating inside the shop while companions look around; most shops can provide a chair on request.
Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı)
Explore one of the world's largest covered markets with thousands of shops selling spices, textiles, jewelry and carpets. Guided route focuses on easy-to-navigate passages and rest points.
Tips from local experts:
- The Grand Bazaar can be busy and contains many small alleys; stay close to the guide and agree on a visible meeting point in case of separation.
- Carry small change for quick purchases and ask vendors to show the item and price clearly before paying.
- Watch for low door frames and uneven cobbles in some sections; a walking stick or cane users should take care on cobbled areas.
Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya)
Visit the exterior and, where possible, the interior of Hagia Sophia. Note: Hagia Sophia currently functions as a mosque; entry or interior access during prayer times may be limited. The guide will explain the building's layered history.
Tips from local experts:
- Hagia Sophia operates as an active place of worship — dress modestly and be prepared to remove hats; interior access may pause for prayer times.
- Shoes may need to be removed for certain areas; wear socks or easily removable footwear for convenience.
- The guide will advise on quieter times to visit the interior; if interior entry is restricted we will provide a detailed exterior and historical briefing.
Sultanahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque)
Short visit to view the exterior and main prayer hall of the Sultanahmet (Blue) Mosque, known for its İznik tiles and six minarets. Guide will cover architectural highlights and etiquette for mosque visits.
Tips from local experts:
- The mosque is an active place of worship — entry may be restricted during prayer times; the guide will coordinate brief interior visits when permitted.
- Modest dress required (shoulders and knees covered); women may be asked to use a provided headscarf for entry.
- Benches and shaded areas are nearby for rest; please mention any mobility needs to the guide so they can prioritize accessible routes.
Sultanahmet Square (brief orientation)
A short orientation stop in Sultanahmet Square to see monuments such as the Obelisk of Theodosius and the Serpentine Column while the guide provides historical context.
Tips from local experts:
- There are shaded benches in the square — use them to rest and hydrate between walking segments.
- Protect yourself from sun or light rain depending on the day's weather; the guide will advise on sheltering spots if needed.
- Photography is welcomed, but be mindful of guided-group placement so others can hear the guide's commentary.
Included Lunch in Sultanahmet
Seated lunch in the Sultanahmet area (menu selected to suit a range of diets). Time reserved for a relaxed meal and restroom break.
Tips from local experts:
- Inform your guide of any dietary restrictions or allergies before the meal so the restaurant can accommodate them.
- Lunch is seated and paced; use this time to rest feet and refill water bottles for the afternoon.
- If you prefer a quieter seating area, ask the guide to request a table away from busy walkways when possible.
Historic Areas of Istanbul — Guided Walk
A concluding guided walk and overview of Sultanahmet's historic areas, covering significant sites and viewpoints with time for photos and a final Q&A. Tour concludes with drop-off to pre-arranged pickup locations.
Tips from local experts:
- Expect some short sections of uneven pavement; take the pace set by the guide and use seats/benches provided during stops.
- Carry any medication in an easily accessible bag and let the guide know if you need extra rest breaks before the final transfer.
- Confirm your preferred drop-off point with the guide at the start of the day (hotel or main meeting points such as the Fountain of Sultan Ahmed III).
