Itinerary
Day 1
Morning pick-up, transfer to Anatolian-side ferry terminal and scenic ferry crossing to Büyükada.
Ferry Station — pickup and outbound crossing
Hotel pick-up in Istanbul (central areas) and transfer to the Anatolian-side ferry terminal. Board the public ferry and enjoy traditional Turkish tea and simit on the 45-minute crossing to Büyükada while your guide introduces the history of the Princes’ Islands.
Tips from local experts:
- Be ready at least 10 minutes before your confirmed pick-up time; the guide will confirm exact pick-up location after booking.
- Carry a light windbreaker for the ferry — it can be breezy on deck even in summer.
- Bring a small bag for valuables on board; ferries have limited secure storage for luggage.
Princes' Islands — orientation on arrival
Arrival and short orientation on the archipelago covering island layout, local customs, and the plan for the day.
Tips from local experts:
- Keep your phone or camera ready for photos of the marina as you step off the ferry; the pier area is compact and easy to navigate.
- If you prefer quieter streets, ask your guide to start away from the main pier where locals stroll.
- Confirm a visible meeting point and time with your guide for later in the day (useful if you split up for photos or a short swim).
Büyükada — stroll, coffee, and relaxed time
Explore Büyükada’s car-free streets, historic mansions, and a seaside coffee or tea (option to have a coffee with a traditional fortune reading). Time allocated for a relaxed lunch at a waterfront café.
Tips from local experts:
- Many cafés on Büyükada have outdoor seating with sea views — request a corner seat for more privacy.
- If you want the traditional coffee fortune reading, let your guide know early so they can arrange it at a local café.
- Wear comfortable shoes for cobblestone lanes and palace-abutting sidewalks; some cafés have steps so ask for level access if needed.
Dilburnu Nature Park — coves and nature
Walk through pine-shaded trails of Dilburnu, visit small secluded stone coves for swimming or relaxation, and observe local birdlife. Time to unwind by the water.
Tips from local experts:
- If you plan to swim, bring swimwear and quick-dry towel; changing options are limited in the nature park.
- Use biodegradable sunscreen to protect the marine environment when swimming in the coves.
- There is uneven terrain and some short stone steps near coves; consider bringing light walking shoes for short walks.
St. George's Church (Aya Yorgi) — viewpoint
Visit the island’s highest point and the historic St. George’s Church for panoramic views. Note there is an uphill walk (the 'hill of torment') to reach the site.
Tips from local experts:
- The climb to Aya Yorgi involves a steady uphill path; take it slowly and use frequent short rests for photos and views.
- There are benches and shaded spots near the summit — sit for a moment to enjoy the panorama together.
- If mobility is a concern, discuss alternatives with your guide; there are shorter viewpoints lower down with good views.
Greek Orphanage — exterior viewing
View the historic multi-storey wooden Greek Orphanage (Prinkipos), one of the island’s most notable buildings. The visit is an external viewing; interior access may be restricted.
Tips from local experts:
- The orphanage is best viewed from the exterior; keep to designated vantage points and obey local signage.
- Ask your guide for a brief history summary at the viewing spot to enrich the photo opportunity.
- Respect private property and local residents — do not enter restricted areas around the building.
Islands Museum — museum visit, return ferry and hotel drop-off
Visit the Islands Museum for context on local history and island life. After the museum visit, return to the main pier, board the ferry to Istanbul and transfer back to your hotel for drop-off. (This block includes museum time, return transit, and drop-off.)
Tips from local experts:
- Plan a light final souvenir purchase near the pier after the museum; shops close earlier than mainland stores.
- Keep small change ready for on-boat refreshments or last-minute snacks before the ferry departs.
- Confirm exact drop-off time and expected arrival window with your guide once on board so you can plan the rest of your evening.
