Itinerary
Day 1
Morning or early-afternoon small-group walking tour visiting quieter, local sites in Arashiyama. Start point: Randen Arashiyama area. Total duration ~3.5 hours. The route follows the agenda items in order.
Meet at Randen / Arashiyama area (Intro)
Meet your guide at the designated Randen meeting point for a short introduction, hand out the tour booklet, confirm mobility needs, and review the route. The guide will explain safety, timing, and options (including the Tale of Genji storytelling option).
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 5 minutes early; the meeting spot is outside the Randen Arashiyama station entrance.
- Keep a small amount of cash handy for optional shrine/temple stamps (goshuin) — many sites accept cash only.
- Carry a light jacket in autumn mornings; temperatures can be cool under the bamboo canopy.
Sagano local paths, moss garden & black torii observation
Walk hidden paths in the Sagano neighborhood to visit quieter shrine/temple sites, observe a black wooden torii gate and a moss garden, and learn the differences between shrines and temples. Optional: receive a shrine/temple stamp (goshuin) if you have a stamp book.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring your stamp book if you plan to collect a goshuin; you may be asked to remove shoes at some sites.
- Keep voices low near moss gardens and temple interiors to respect the spiritual atmosphere.
- Wear shoes that are easy to remove for interior visits where you must take them off.
Arashiyama / Sagano Bamboo Grove (photo time)
Stroll into the bamboo grove to enjoy the soundscape and take memorable photos. The guide will help with composition and take group photos on request.
Tips from local experts:
- The bamboo path can be narrow; step aside politely for other visitors and for photography setups.
- If you want the quietest photos, follow the guide’s suggested timing to avoid the busiest stretches.
- Protect camera gear from dappled sunlight — use a lens hood and steady footing on uneven paths.
Seiryō-ji (Saga Shakado) — old temple and national-treasure statue
Visit Seiryō-ji (known locally as Saga Shakado) to see its historic temple buildings, moss garden, and the famous Shaka Nyorai statue. The guide will explain temple visiting etiquette, and guests may obtain temple stamps if they wish. Note: admission is not included in the tour price.
Tips from local experts:
- You must remove shoes to enter certain interior areas; wear socks or bring a thin pair for comfort.
- Have small notes ready if you request a goshuin (temple stamp); some sites prefer exact change.
- Follow the guide when moving through corridors and gardens to preserve quiet and avoid crowding.
Saga Imperial Villa (Saga Gosho) — former imperial residence
Explore the quieter Saga Gosho grounds — a former imperial palace with distinctive architectural features and corridors. The guide will point out notable design elements and historical context. Admission is not included in the tour price.
Tips from local experts:
- Some areas may have low thresholds or narrow corridors; take care when moving between rooms.
- There is limited seating inside; plan brief rests in gardens between indoor visits.
- If you prefer less walking, inform the guide so pacing can be adjusted on routes between rooms and gardens.
Ōsawa-no-ike (Daikaku-ji) pond & scenic finish
Visit the historic Ōsawa pond area within the Daikaku-ji grounds for seasonal scenery and a calm finish. The guide will offer concluding commentary and answer questions. Admission to Daikaku-ji / pond area is not included in the tour price.
Tips from local experts:
- The pond area has limited shelter; check weather and bring a compact umbrella in case of rain.
- Finish point areas have few restaurants nearby—plan snacks or post-tour plans accordingly.
- If you choose to enter additional temple buildings, expect to remove shoes and follow interior etiquette.
Wrap-up and tour close (Ukyo-ku)
Final 20 minutes to wrap up the walk: answer questions, review highlights, and confirm end point and onward directions. The guide will suggest nearby transit options and quiet spots for a post-tour break.
Tips from local experts:
- Confirm your onward transit — the guide can point to the nearest Randen station or bus stop for onward travel.
- If you enjoyed stamps or small purchases, keep them secure in your day bag for the remainder of travel.
- If staying nearby, ask the guide for a quiet café recommendation for a relaxed post-tour moment.
