Itinerary
Day 1
Morning pickup, waterfall hike and swim, followed by an organic farm tour and family lunch at La Finquita.
Pickup — Meet your guide at the Central Park (Parque Central de La Fortuna)
Your guide will meet your group at Parque Central de La Fortuna for a quick check-in, safety briefing and to confirm who needs towels/life vests. If you requested hotel pickup, the driver will meet you at your hotel at the pre-arranged time instead.
Tips from local experts:
- If you arrive by car, there is limited short-term parking near the park — keep an eye on children around the plaza and fountains.
- Parque Central has public restrooms — use them before the hike; kids will appreciate one last bathroom stop.
- Bring a small backpack with a change of clothes, sunscreen and a plastic bag for wet swimsuits; you'll be picked up promptly so stay on time.
Short transfer to La Fortuna Waterfall entrance
Quick drive from the town center to the La Fortuna Waterfall entrance. Your guide will buy or show tickets and give a final safety talk about the trail and swimming rules.
Tips from local experts:
- The drive is short (about 10–15 minutes) but narrow — keep kids seated and hold small children.
- If it's the wet season (May–November), request a quick raincheck from the guide and pack light rain layers for kids.
- Have a designated spot for sunscreen so you can reapply once you get to the trailhead.
La Fortuna Waterfall — Hike down ~530 steps and supervised swim
Guided descent through rainforest to the 70 m waterfall. Spend time at the natural pool swimming under the falls (supervised by your guide) and take family photos. Towels are provided by the operator.
Tips from local experts:
- The trail includes ~530 steep steps each way — carry toddlers in a secure child carrier; ages 4+ are recommended for independent walking.
- There are changing rooms and public restrooms near the entrance/exit — plan a restroom stop before descending with kids.
- Footwear: sturdy sandals or light hiking shoes with grip; the rocks near the pool are slippery — the guide can advise safe spots to swim and play.
Climb back up, change & short rest
Return up the stairs at a steady family pace, use the changing rooms if needed, and take a short water/snack break before heading to La Finquita.
Tips from local experts:
- Climb at the pace of the slowest child — there are regular viewpoints and benches to rest on the way up.
- Bring small, quick snacks (fruit bars) for kids — the climb can be tiring and a snack helps maintain energy.
- Use the onsite showers to rinse off before the farm visit if you prefer not to sit in a vehicle in wet swimwear.
Short transfer to La Finquita Farm & Restaurant
A brief drive to La Finquita, a regenerative organic farm and restaurant. Settle in for a guided walk and farm-to-table lunch.
Tips from local experts:
- The farm is a short drive (typically 10–20 minutes) along rural roads — expect some bumps; bring a hat and water for kids.
- If anyone needs a car seat, request in advance from the operator; otherwise hold young children securely during the transfer.
- Carry a lightweight stroller if you have small children — the immediate dining area is stroller friendly but some farm paths are uneven.
La Finquita — Regenerative farm tour & organic family lunch
Guided walk through La Finquita's gardens to see composting, micro-organisms, and organic vegetable beds followed by a fresh, balanced lunch made from on-site produce. Meals include child-friendly options and water.
Tips from local experts:
- Mention any allergies or picky-eaters when you arrive — the kitchen is used to adapting meals for children.
- The farm paths can be uneven and slightly muddy after rain — closed-toe shoes are best for kids during the tour.
- Ask for a kid portion or shared plates — portions are fresh and generous; staff are family-friendly and can provide high chairs if requested.
Return drop-off to central La Fortuna / end of tour
After lunch you'll be returned to Parque Central de La Fortuna or to your pre-arranged hotel drop-off point. The guide will recap the experience and provide recommendations for the rest of your day.
Tips from local experts:
- If you need help arranging laundry or drying wet swimwear, ask your guide — they know quick local options.
- Tipping guideline: 10–15% for a helpful guide and driver is appreciated; cash in local currency is convenient.
- Plan a low-key afternoon (pool or short nap) after this active morning — younger children often need downtime after the hike and swim.
