Itinerary
Day 1
Half-day morning or afternoon option visiting the Miraflores Visitor Center at the Panama Canal, followed by a scenic drive (Cerro Ancón), Amador Causeway photo stop, and a 1-hour guided walk through Casco Antiguo. Pick-up from central Panama City hotels is included when within the operator's pick-up zone.
Miraflores Visitor Center — Panama Canal (observation & exhibits)
Visit the Miraflores Visitor Center to watch ships transit the Miraflores locks from the observation area and learn the basics of the Canal’s history and operation. Note: IMAX and some indoor exhibition spaces may be temporarily limited; canal entry ticket is included only if selected at booking.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring a lightweight jacket — mornings can be breezy near the locks and observation terraces may be exposed.
- If you selected “With Canal Ticket,” your guide will hand out physical tickets on board; if not, have a form of ID ready if you plan to purchase tickets at the center.
- Because some indoor exhibition areas may be closed during improvements, ask your guide about the best viewpoint for watching ship transits on the day of your visit.
Scenic drive across Cerro Ancón (Ancon Hill) — panoramic views and nature
A short panoramic drive across Cerro Ancón to view historic houses, wartime sites, and the chance to see local wildlife (sloths, birds). This is primarily a viewpoint/photo stop; walking is minimal and mostly on paved/graded roads.
Tips from local experts:
- This stop involves brief on/off the vehicle photo opportunities; families with strollers should keep them folded for short walks.
- Watch for local wildlife from the roadside; maintain a respectful distance and follow your guide's instructions.
- Limited shade in some viewpoints — bring sunscreen and a hat if you plan to step away from shaded areas for photos.
Amador Causeway (Avenida Amador) — coastal views & light refreshments
Short stop at the Amador Causeway to enjoy Pacific views, city skyline photos, and an opportunity for quick refreshments or a quick browse at duty-free shops (ID required for entry into duty-free stores).
Tips from local experts:
- Duty-free shops require ID for entry — keep passports or government ID handy if you plan to browse.
- If children want a snack or ice cream, pay attention to car seating and crossing points — the area is popular and can be busy on sidewalks.
- Bring sun protection; there is limited continuous shade along the causeway and exposed walkways can be sunny even in early hours.
Casco Antiguo (Casco Viejo) — guided 1-hour walking tour
Guided 1-hour walking tour through the narrow streets of Casco Antiguo: visit historic squares, representative churches, and local craft shops. The guide will point out coffee options (including specialty Geisha coffee where available) and family-friendly souvenir shops.
Tips from local experts:
- Stroller users: some streets are cobbled and uneven — a lightweight, sturdy stroller or baby carrier is recommended for comfort.
- Carry a small amount of local currency for quick craft purchases and snacks; many small shops accept cards but some are cash-preferred.
- If your family enjoys specialty coffee, ask your guide for a short Geisha coffee tasting spot — portions are small and suitable for adults only.
