Meet & Private Finnhorse Sleigh Ride
Gather at the meeting point on Joulumaantie for a warm welcome and short introduction to the Finnhorse (history, care and what to expect). Guests will be seated on reindeer hides under warm blankets for the private sleigh (or wagon, if no snow) route through the atmospheric Lapland forest (about 2 km; ride time 45–60 minutes). After the ride enjoy a hot berry drink and traditional Finnish pastry beside the campfire while your guide answers questions.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 10–15 minutes early at the north end of Joulumaantie, Rovaniemi so the group can be briefed and departures can start on time; there is no public transport directly to the meeting point.
- Dress in warm layers (wool base layer + insulated outer layer), warm boots, hat and gloves; blankets are provided but extra warm layers improve comfort for couples wanting a snug experience.
- For safety and comfort: infants must not sit on laps and infant seats are not available. Carry a close-fitting baby carrier if needed and check local weather before departure.

Why this experience
A Finnhorse—Finland's native breed, sturdy and calm—will carry you in a wooden sleigh through quiet forest where the only sounds are runners whisper-soft on snow and the horse's rhythmic breathing. No group passengers, no schedules—just you, the horse, and the guide steering through trails where centuries of Lappish tradition still lives. Wrapped in thick blankets, sipping hot drinks, you'll move at the speed of snow, noticing details: the way frost clings to pine branches, the silence between heartbeats, the slight shift in the horse's gait as it navigates.
This is Lapland's original transportation method, still alive because it works. The horse knows these trails. You sit back and let tradition move you forward.
What lingers after is the slowness—the gift of moving at a pace where you can actually think, breathe, and be present with the landscape around you.
Before you go
- Best time: Winter (November to March) when snow is deep and trails are established. December–February offer the most reliable snow depth and traditional winter atmosphere.
- Budget: Check the booking widget for current tour pricing. Private sleigh, Finnhorse, guide, blankets, and hot drinks are included.
- Difficulty: Easy. You sit in a sleigh; the horse and guide do the work. No fitness requirement.
- What to bring: Extreme cold-weather gear—thermal layers, insulated parka, wool socks, waterproof gloves, warm hat, face protection, insulated boots. The operator typically provides blankets; confirm what extra insulation they offer.
- Getting there: Sleigh rides depart from stables or meeting points 15–45 minutes from Rovaniemi. Confirm transportation to the meeting point—some operators include pickup from town; others require you to drive/arrange transport to the stable.
- Accessibility: Climbing into and out of a sleigh requires some agility and balance. The seating is snug but typically comfortable. Discuss mobility needs with the operator beforehand.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the ride? Typical rides last 45 minutes to 1 hour, covering 5–10 kilometers through forest trails. Confirm duration when booking.
Is it cold in the sleigh? Blankets and insulation help, but you'll feel cold sitting still. Dress in layers and move a little to keep your circulation active. The guide usually builds in a warming hut stop on longer rides.
Are Finnhorses safe? Finnhorses are calm, well-trained, and accustomed to tourists. They're reliable animals in demanding conditions. Trust the guide's expertise—they've worked with these horses for years.
Will I see the Northern Lights? Daytime rides happen during hours when the aurora isn't visible. If you book an evening ride during aurora season and skies are clear, you may see activity while riding, though the lights are typically dim early evening.
