Itinerary
Day 1
Private day tour with hotel pickup in Tokyo's 23 wards. Timings are planned for a relaxed pace with buffer time for traffic and brief optional stops.
Departure from Tokyo
Your guide meets you in your hotel lobby in Tokyo. Board the private, air-conditioned vehicle and begin the drive toward the Hakone region.
Tips from local experts:
- Confirm your exact pickup point (hotel name and lobby details) when you book so the guide can meet you smoothly.
- Have a small day bag ready with swimwear and a towel if you plan to use the onsen after lunch.
- Keep passports or photo ID handy if you plan to purchase museum or onsen tickets that may require ID verification.
Mt Fuji Observation Deck
Short stop at a Mt. Fuji viewpoint (Mt Taikan observatory area) for panoramic views of Mt. Fuji and the Hakone valley when weather permits.
Tips from local experts:
- Visibility depends on weather — clear mornings in spring increase chances of a good view; your guide will choose the best viewpoint based on conditions.
- Allow 20–30 minutes here for photos and a short walk; wear comfortable shoes for uneven surfaces.
- If clouds obscure Fuji, your guide will provide alternative viewpoints or commentary on the valley and landscape.
Lake Ashi
Arrive at the shores of Lake Ashi with stops to view lakeside scenery and the iconic torii gates along the shoreline.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring a light waterproof layer in case of coastal breezes near the lake.
- If you want a closer view of the torii gates, plan for a short walk along the lakeshore; the guide will point out the safest access points.
- Restrooms and small souvenir shops are available near main lake access points; carry small change for incidental purchases.
Visit Hakone Shrine
Walk through the shrine grounds set in forest near Lake Ashi, view the red torii gate, and enjoy the tranquil setting.
Tips from local experts:
- Respect shrine etiquette: bow at the torii, cleanse hands at the chozuya (water basin) if you approach inner buildings.
- Paths can be uneven; choose comfortable shoes and go slowly — the shrine grounds are compact but include steps.
- Souvenir stalls near the shrine take cash and cards; if you plan to purchase amulets, have small bills available.
Traditional Teahouse Stop (Time Permitting)
A brief, time-permitting stop at a local teahouse to sample traditional teas and light snacks — a quiet moment to pause and enjoy local flavors.
Tips from local experts:
- Let your guide know any tea or snack preferences (e.g., green tea strength or dietary restrictions) so they can advise the teahouse staff.
- Tea stops are typically short (20–30 minutes); if you'd like a longer tasting, mention this to your guide so the day can be re-timed.
- Many teahouses are small and intimate; speak softly and enjoy the calm atmosphere — it's a popular spot for couples looking for a quiet break.
Secluded Onsen Experience and Japanese Meal
Visit a carefully selected Hakone onsen for a relaxing soak and a local Japanese meal. Options vary by mood — a tranquil public onsen or a ryokan-style setting, depending on availability and preferences.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring or wear modest swimwear if the chosen onsen requires it; some onsen have separate bathing rules — your guide will brief you beforehand.
- Tattoos can be restricted at some onsen; inform your guide in advance so they can arrange a suitable facility if needed.
- Plan to spend around 90 minutes here for bathing and a simple meal; if you'd like a longer massage or extended relaxation, tell your guide early (additional services are not included).
Additional road exploration (Time Permitting)
Drive a second iconic scenic road in the Fuji/Hakone region with stops at several viewpoints for close views of Fuji, Lake Ashinoko, and the Sagami Bay line of sight.
Tips from local experts:
- This section is weather-dependent; if visibility is low the guide may shorten the stops and focus on sheltered viewpoints.
- Keep your camera ready; the drive includes a sequence of four short panorama stops that are excellent for couples' photos.
- If you prefer fewer stops and more time at the museum instead, tell your guide — the day is private and can be rebalanced.
Hakone Open Air Museum
Time-permitting short visit to the Open-Air Museum’s sculpture garden and highlight exhibits — an opportunity to see large outdoor works and a quick indoor collection viewing.
Tips from local experts:
- Allow at least 30 minutes for a brief visit to the outdoor sculpture park; longer visits are possible if you skip other optional stops.
- Paths are mostly graded and stroller-friendly, but wear comfortable shoes for walking across the grounds.
- If you'd like to prioritize this museum over the Pola Museum, tell your guide to allocate more time here while keeping the return schedule in mind.
Pola Museum of Art
Optional brief stop at the Pola Museum of Art (time permitting) to view impressionist and modern works in a woodland setting; typically chosen when weather is poor or when guests prefer indoor art.
Tips from local experts:
- This museum is set in the woods and involves short indoor walking; if you prefer more outdoor time, prioritize the Open-Air Museum instead.
- Check cloakroom availability if you have larger bags — most museums provide a small storage area for convenience.
- If you plan to view multiple museum galleries, notify your guide so transport timing can be adjusted for a longer stay (museum entry is not included).
Return Drive to Tokyo
Conclude the day with a scenic drive back to Tokyo. Your guide will drop you at your original pickup hotel or another agreed drop-off within Tokyo's 23 wards.
Tips from local experts:
- Expect return travel time of roughly 90–110 minutes depending on traffic; use the drive to relax after the day’s activities.
- If you prefer an earlier or later drop-off location within Tokyo, let your guide know at the start of the day so the return can be planned.
- Keep any belongings from the onsen (small towels, personal items) in a dedicated bag to make retrieval at the end of the day easy.
