Kamo River, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan

Tips from local experts:

  • Meet at Kikunoi Roan’s entrance on time; the guide will confirm headcount before starting.
  • Evening riverside can be cooler—bring a light jacket if temperatures drop.
  • Keep voices low near residential riverside houses out of respect for local residents.

19:35 – 19:45 • 10m

Walk into Gion district. The guide explains local history, teahouse culture, and etiquette for quietly observing geiko/maiko in the evening.

Gion, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan (Gion district)

Tips from local experts:

  • Avoid blocking narrow streets or stopping abruptly; step aside to let local traffic pass.
  • Use your camera quietly—no flash if a geiko or maiko is nearby to avoid disturbance.
  • Follow the guide’s instructions for respectful viewing locations to maximise chances of sightings.

Hanamikoji Street — Geisha spotting and sake-in-hand

19:45 – 19:55 • 10m

70 Benten-cho, Todaijimatsubara, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, 605-0000, Japan

  • If you wish to participate in the stone ritual, prepare to bend/stoop—there is a low crawl-through hole.
  • Carry small cash for shrine amulets if you choose to purchase one; the guide will explain customary behavior.
  • Be mindful of shrine closing times and follow the guide’s directions; photography rules may apply in certain areas.

Hōkan-ji (Yasaka Pagoda) — Iconic five-story pagoda

20:05 – 20:15 • 10m

View the illuminated Yasaka Pagoda (Hōkan-ji) and hear the guide’s notes on the temple’s history and architecture while stopping for photos from respectful vantage points.

388 Kiyomizuyasakakamimachi, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, 605-0862, Japan

Tips from local experts:

  • Use the designated viewpoints for photos to avoid stepping into private property or blocking pedestrian flow.
  • Pagoda access inside may be limited—this stop is primarily for exterior viewing and photography.
  • Keep movements slow on the narrow streets near the pagoda; stone paving can be uneven underfoot.

Ninenzaka — Stone-paved historic lane

20:15 – 20:25 • 10m

Stroll up Ninenzaka’s atmospheric stone slope, with commentary on traditional machiya architecture and time to browse small shops (outside only) as we keep to the evening pace.

Ninenzaka, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, 605-0001, Japan

Tips from local experts:

  • Steps and slopes can be narrow—walk single-file where necessary and wear sturdy shoes.
  • Shops along Ninenzaka may close earlier in the evening; outside browsing is possible but interiors may be closed.
  • Respect shop opening hours and avoid loud conversation near closed storefronts.

Sannenzaka — Stone-paved slope adjacent to Ninenzaka

20:25 – 20:35 • 10m

Continue along Sannenzaka with its preserved wooden buildings and traditional sweets shops; the guide will note local legends and good photo spots.

Sannenzaka, Kiyomizu, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, 605-0862, Japan

Tips from local experts:

  • Watch your step on the stone paving—avoid running, especially after rain when stones are slippery.
  • If you plan to buy sweets, carry small change; many evening shops accept only cash.
  • Avoid blocking stairways and doorways when stopping for photos to keep pedestrian traffic flowing.

Nene no Michi — Quiet historic pathway

20:35 – 20:45 • 10m

Walk Nene no Michi, a peaceful stone-paved lane linking Kodaiji and Maruyama Park, while the guide highlights the area’s historical connections and seasonal charms.

Shimokawaracho, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, 605-0825, Japan

Tips from local experts:

  • This path is typically quieter in the evening—keep noise low to maintain the tranquil atmosphere.
  • Benches and small resting spots may be limited—ask the guide for a short seated break if needed.
  • If visiting during cooler months, some sections can be breezy; layer clothing accordingly.

Yasaka Shrine (Gion Shrine) — Night illumination and closing remarks

20:45 – 20:50 • 5m

Finish at Yasaka Shrine to view the lantern-lit precincts, learn about Gion Matsuri and local spirituality, and receive final photos and photography assistance from the guide.

625 Gionmachi Kitagawa, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, 605-0073, Japan

Tips from local experts:

  • Respect shrine boundaries and signage—some areas may be cordoned off after dark.
  • If lighting is dim, move carefully; stone and gravel paths can be uneven at night.
  • Ask the guide for suggested quiet photo compositions rather than using bright flashes near worship areas.
