Cooking class
Meet at the cooking studio for tea, take a hands-on cooking lesson, enjoy the prepared lunch in a traditional Japanese room overlooking a garden, then walk to a nearby supermarket with the instructor for a 30-minute tour to locate the ingredients and seasonings used during the lesson.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 10 minutes before the 09:30 start to remove shoes and settle in; the studio is a traditional house where shoes are left at the entrance.
- Notify the operator in advance of any food allergies or dietary restrictions so recipes and ingredients can be adjusted before the lesson.
- The location and studio are not wheelchair- or stroller-accessible and involve a short walk (approx. 10–15 minutes round trip) to the local supermarket; plan accordingly.

Why this experience
You'll start at a local supermarket near Fushimi Inari shrine, the kind where neighborhood residents shop daily. Your host guides you through the aisles, explaining what makes each ingredient special, what's seasonal, and what's worth buying. You'll learn which miso to use, the difference between soy sauces, what fresh vegetables are in season right now. Then you'll return to their traditional Kyoto house—a real home, not a restaurant—and cook together in their kitchen. The menu changes seasonally and depends on what you selected at the market, but expect hands-on prep: chopping, simmering, plating. By the end, you'll eat what you made, sharing a meal with your host in their dining space. It's cooking as a local lives it, not as a tourist sees it.
This is ideal for couples who want to understand how Japanese home cooking actually works, who are curious about ingredients, and who value intimate settings over group classes. You'll leave knowing how to shop, how to cook, and with real knowledge of a Kyoto kitchen.
