Landmannalaugar - colorful mountains
Arrive at Landmannalaugar to explore the colourful rhyolite mountains, lava fields and obsidian areas with short, easy walks and photo stops. Time can be adapted for a short, easy walk or to relax near the natural hot spring area (bathing optional). The guide provides kid-friendly explanations about volcanoes, lava and glaciers.
Tips from local experts:
- Dress in layers and waterproof outerwear — weather can change quickly in the Highlands.
- Bring a small towel and swimsuit in a dry bag if you may want to use the hot spring; bathing is optional and depends on conditions.
- Children must be supervised near cliffs and hot spring edges; keep to the guide’s suggested safe viewing areas.
Bláhylur volcanic crater
Short stop at the Bláhylur volcanic crater near the Valley of Tears area for close-up views and a short, easy walk suitable for children. The guide will share the simple story behind the Valley of Tears and point out geological features.
Tips from local experts:
- Sturdy shoes recommended — short uneven sections may be present near the crater rim.
- Use the guide’s recommended viewpoints for family photos; avoid getting too close to unstable edges.
- Carry spare snacks and water for children—there are no facilities at the crater.
Sigöldugljúfur waterfalls
Visit the Sigöldugljúfur canyon and waterfalls with short, easy viewpoints and minimal walking. The stop focuses on safe viewing for families and simple explanations of the canyon’s glacial origins.
Tips from local experts:
- Keep children close near viewpoints; barriers may be limited in places.
- Expect uneven ground and some mud in wet weather — waterproof shoes are helpful.
- Plan a bathroom and snack break before leaving; public facilities are limited in this area.
Haifoss waterfall
Stop at Háifoss viewpoint for views of one of Iceland’s higher waterfalls. The visit includes short, family-friendly viewing and photo opportunities with time to stretch legs before the return drive.
Tips from local experts:
- Háifoss viewpoints can be exposed — bring windproof layers for children and adults.
- Parking and the main viewpoint are a short walk from the car park; keep children within sight on the path.
- There are limited amenities; pack a small first-aid kit and any needed child supplies for the stop.
