Itinerary
Day 1
Full-day private 4x4 expedition into Iceland's southern highlands. Start in Reykjavík with door-to-door pickup and return to Reykjavík in the evening. Timings and order of stops will be adjusted by the guide for safety and light.
00. DEPARTURE
Pickup from your Reykjavík accommodation (or agreed meeting point). Brief safety and comfort introduction to the vehicle, route, and expected road conditions before driving into the highlands.
Tips from local experts:
- Have a compact daypack ready with layered clothing and a waterproof shell for quick access during stops.
- Carry any medications and motion-sickness remedies; off-road sections and river crossings can be bumpy.
- Confirm your exact pickup address at least the evening before to allow timely routing through narrow city streets.
01. HJÁLPARFOSS
Short walk to Hjálparfoss to view the twin cascades set against basalt formations with views toward the Hekla area. This is a gentle introduction to highland scenery and easy walking on compacted paths.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear waterproof shoes—paths can be wet and uneven near the falls.
- Bring a lightweight windproof layer; spray from the falls and changing winds can be chilly.
- Use the vehicle for gear storage; keep valuables dry in a zip-lock inside your daypack while exploring.
02. HNAUSAPOLLUR
Drive deeper into the highlands to the rim of Hnausapollur crater lake. Short rim walk for crater views and photographic contrasts between the red ash and the lake's deep color. Time included for a packed lunch if required.
Tips from local experts:
- Pack a lunch in an insulated bag—there are no food services at this stop.
- Stay on the marked rim paths; loose ash and steep edges can be unstable.
- If you want photos with minimal people, ask your guide for the quieter vantage points around the rim.
03. LANDMANNALAUGAR
Arrive at the Landmannalaugar geothermal valley. Options: short hikes between rhyolite formations, photography of the painted hills, or a soak in the natural hot stream. This stop is the expedition's highlight and the designated 'special moment'—time to relax and take in the unique terrain.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring swimwear and a quick-dry towel if you plan to soak; changing is basic (mountain hut style).
- Follow the guide's guidance on safe areas to bathe—water temperature varies and some spots can be hot.
- Wear sturdy footwear for short ridge and valley walks; rhyolite slopes can be loose underfoot.
04. SIGÖLDUGLJÚFUR
Visit Sigöldugljúfur (the Valley of Tears) — a less-visited canyon with multiple waterfalls. Short, scenic walk along the canyon rim and viewpoints. Terrain can include uneven paths and short, steeper sections.
Tips from local experts:
- Expect uneven footing; hiking shoes with traction are recommended for canyon viewpoints.
- Carry a small waterproof cover for camera equipment; mist and spray are common near waterfalls.
- Plan for limited light in narrow canyon sections—ask your guide for the best viewpoints and photo framing.
05. RETURN
Drive back to Reykjavík with short rest stops as needed. Your guide will return you to your original pickup address or agreed drop-off point in Reykjavík (arrival time dependent on route and road conditions).
Tips from local experts:
- Keep your phone charged for pickup confirmation and photos from the day; signal can be intermittent in the highlands.
- If you feel cold after a soak, change into dry layers before the return drive to stay comfortable.
- Confirm an approximate arrival time with your guide toward the end of the day to coordinate evening plans.
