Itinerary
Day 1
Two-hour guided walking tour around the Imperial Palace area. Meet at Wadakura Fountain Park (in front of Starbucks). Tour runs in English only.
Meeting: Wadakura Fountain Park (in front of Starbucks)
Meet your guide in front of the Starbucks at Kōkyo Gaien / Wadakura Fountain Park. Guide will hold a sign reading “Local Guide Stars.” Quick check-in, safety briefing and orientation before departure.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 10 minutes before the tour start to check in; the guide will be holding a “Local Guide Stars” sign in front of Starbucks.
- There is a security check to enter Imperial Palace areas—do not bring knives or alcohol in your carry-on.
- Wear comfortable shoes and bring a light layer; October mornings can be cool and parts of the walk include slopes and stairs.
Nijubashi Bridge (the Double Bridge)
Stop at Nijubashi to learn about the bridge's 19th-century arch design and Edo Castle's role as Japan’s largest fortress. The guide will explain defensive features and historical context.
Tips from local experts:
- Nijubashi is a prime photo spot—please stand to the side to avoid blocking the pathway for other visitors.
- Keep personal belongings secure; this area can be busy with other visitors and photographers.
- Expect short stair sections and gentle slopes near the bridge; maintain steady footing and take your time on steps.
Imperial Palace East Gardens (Kokyo Higashi Gyoen)
Guided exploration of the Imperial Palace East Gardens to view the remains of Edo Castle's stone walls, seasonal plantings, and historic sites within the gardens. The guide will discuss the imperial system and the samurai/shogun era.
Tips from local experts:
- All visitors pass through a security screening to enter the gardens—empty pockets and small bags help speed the check.
- The gardens include uneven stone paths, slopes and stairs—comfortable footwear is recommended and the route is not wheelchair accessible.
- Public restrooms are available near the garden entrances; use them before deeper exploration as some routes require stair climbs.
Wrap-up & Q&A (Return near Wadakura Fountain Park)
Short wrap-up with time for final questions, photo checks, and directions for onward plans. Tour officially ends at the meeting point.
Tips from local experts:
- If you plan to continue exploring, ask the guide for nearby dining or transit suggestions based on your group preferences.
- Collect any personal items and check everyone in your group before dispersing—this helps keep the group together in a busy area.
- Public transport is nearby (Kudanshita Station and other Marunouchi/Chiyoda line stations); allow time if you have immediate onward travel.
