Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Iceland. Individual Flybus shuttle transfer from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík. Evening at leisure in Reykjavík and overnight at Hotel Klettur (self-guided).
Arrival transfer by Flybus Plus to Reykjavík
Individual shuttle from Keflavík International Airport (KEF) to central Reykjavík where guests make their own way to Hotel Klettur. Transfer time depends on arrivals; Flybus runs frequent scheduled services.
Tips from local experts:
- Collect luggage and follow signs for 'Flybus/BSI' shuttle at Keflavík Airport arrival hall; buses depart from the bus area outside Arrivals.
- Have your hotel name and address visible on your phone to show the driver or confirm drop-off point (Hotel Klettur, Mjölnisholt 12, Reykjavík).
- Carry a small warm layer and waterproof shell for the short walk from the bus stop to the hotel entrance in winter weather.
Check-in and evening in Reykjavík (self-guided)
Arrive at Hotel Klettur, check in and enjoy free time to walk a short distance into Reykjavík’s center, visit Laugavegur shopping street, or dine locally. Dinner on your own.
Tips from local experts:
- Hotel Klettur is at Mjölnisholt 12; ask reception for nearby quiet streets for a short romantic evening walk.
- If you plan to photograph the city lights, bring a small tripod or use a stable surface — winter nights are long and great for low-light city photos.
- For a cozy café experience, look for a seat early (18:00–19:00) to avoid a wait during dinner hours in central Reykjavík.
Day 2
Morning guided highlights of Reykjavík then west to Borgarnes and Borgarfjörður (Saga Valley). Climb Grábrók, visit Deildartunguhver, Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. Northern Lights lecture and evening garden watch.
Morning meeting & Reykjavík highlights with guide
Meet your guide at Hotel Klettur. Short guided highlights walk to key central sights to introduce Reykjavík before departure west.
Tips from local experts:
- Meet in the Hotel Klettur lobby at 08:50 for a prompt 09:00 departure; guides keep to schedule to reach Borgarnes in good time.
- Wear sturdy shoes for a short walk and have a warm hat and gloves handy for harbor-side breezes.
- Keep camera settings ready for quick photos of Hallgrímskirkja and Harpa if weather clears during the walk.
Settlement Center, Borgarnes
Visit The Settlement Centre to learn about Iceland's earliest days (time to explore exhibits). Lunch on your own in Borgarnes.
Tips from local experts:
- Allow about 60–75 minutes for the Settlement Centre exhibits to get the key historical context.
- There is a café adjacent to the Settlement Centre for light lunches; check opening hours in winter.
- Restrooms are available inside the centre; use facilities here before the next countryside stops.
Grábrók crater climb (short hike)
Short climb to the Grábrók crater rim for views over Borgarfjörður. Moderate walking with some uneven ground.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear waterproof hiking shoes with good grip; the trail is short but can be muddy or icy in winter.
- Take only a small daypack; the climb is about 20–30 minutes each way for most guests.
- Camera tip: the crater rim gives wide views — aim for golden-hour photos if timing allows, but be careful near edges.
Deildartunguhver, Hraunfossar & Barnafoss stops
Visit Deildartunguhver hot spring, then the nearby Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls for short walks and photo stops.
Tips from local experts:
- Expect brief walks from the parking areas to viewpoints; bring layers as wind and spray are common at waterfalls.
- Follow marked paths and barriers at Hraunfossar/Barnafoss for safety — wet rock can be slippery.
- Combine these stops with restroom breaks in Borgarfjörður towns when available; facilities at viewpoints may be limited.
Northern Lights lecture & garden watch
Evening Northern Lights Academy lecture at the hotel, followed by step outside to the hotel garden to search for Aurora with hot chocolate or tea.
Tips from local experts:
- Lecture usually begins after dinner; bring a warm layer for the outdoor portion (thermal base layer recommended).
- If skies are clear, limit use of bright phone screens during the garden watch to preserve night vision for aurora viewing.
- Ask the guide for simple camera settings (ISO and exposure suggestions) and try a test photo before the main show.
Day 3
Full day to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula with a Breiðafjörður fjord cruise (light lunch included), visits to Grundarfjörður and Kirkjufell, Vatnshellir lava tube, and Arnarstapi. Evening photography tips and hot tub time at the hotel.
Breiðafjörður fjord cruise (light lunch included)
Fjord cruise from Stykkishólmur across Breiðafjörður with scenic island views; a light lunch is provided on board per the program.
Tips from local experts:
- Dress warmly in layers and bring a windproof outer layer — sea spray and wind are common even in winter.
- Bring motion-sickness medication if you are sensitive to rolling on open water; seating is available inside and out.
- Keep a camera ready; Stykkishólmur harbour and surrounding islands provide close views for photography from the deck.
Grundarfjörður & Kirkjufell photo stop
Short stop at Grundarfjörður to view and photograph the iconic Kirkjufell mountain and nearby coastline.
Tips from local experts:
- Parking areas are small; stay with the group and follow the guide’s instructions for safe photo spots.
- If road icy conditions occur, stay off marked cliff edges and follow the guide’s safety advice for vantage points.
- Bring a telephoto or wide-angle lens if you have one to capture different perspectives of Kirkjufell.
Vatnshellir lava tube visit
Guided descent into Vatnshellir lava tube (about 35 m underground and ~200 m into the tube). Warm clothing required; the walk is guided and includes steps.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear warm, waterproof footwear with good grip; the cave interior is cold and the floor can be uneven.
- Follow the guide’s directions in the cave — there are steps and low passages in some sections.
- Bring a small headlamp if you prefer extra light, though the guided tour provides lighting and helmets when required.
Arnarstapi coastal walk
Short walk along dramatic coastal cliffs at Arnarstapi, with distinctive rock formations and seabird colonies (seasonal).
Tips from local experts:
- Wear a windproof jacket and warm hat; cliffs are exposed and conditions change quickly.
- Stick to marked paths for safety and to protect nesting seabirds in season.
- Bring binoculars if you enjoy birdwatching; guides can point out features and formations along the route.
Northern Lights photography tips & hotel hot tubs
Evening Northern Lights Academy photography briefing at the hotel followed by relaxation in outdoor hot tubs (hotel facilities permitting).
Tips from local experts:
- Bring swimwear and a warm robe or towel for the short walk from the hotel to any outdoor hot tubs.
- After the photography briefing, use a headlamp with a red filter or low light to preserve night vision during aurora watching.
- If you plan to photograph the aurora, charge camera batteries fully; cold drains batteries faster than usual.
Day 4
Travel the Golden Circle: Hvalfjörður fjord drive, Þingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal fields and Gullfoss. Taste geothermal-baked bread and visit an Icelandic horse stable and a geothermal greenhouse. Overnight in South Iceland (Hella area).
Þingvellir National Park (Golden Circle)
Visit Þingvellir, a UNESCO World Heritage site, for short walks to rift valley viewpoints and historic sites.
Tips from local experts:
- Paths at Þingvellir can be icy in winter; wear grippy footwear and use handrails where provided.
- Keep to the marked trails to protect the fragile environment and for your own safety near cliff edges.
- There are visitor centre restrooms and information displays — plan a 45–60 minute stop to see main viewpoints.
Geysir geothermal area & hot spring bread tasting
Stop at the Geysir geothermal fields to observe erupting geysers and taste traditionally baked bread cooked in geothermal steam.
Tips from local experts:
- Stay on marked boardwalks and viewing areas; some ground is extremely hot and dangerous.
- Try a small sample of the geothermal-baked bread where provided — it is traditionally served warm with butter and boiled eggs.
- Expect steam and strong geothermal smells; bring a scarf to keep wind-driven spray and steam off your face.
Gullfoss waterfall
Visit Gullfoss, the double-tiered waterfall on the Hvítá river. Short walk to viewpoints; protective railings in place.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring an outer waterproof layer — spray from the falls can reach viewing areas depending on wind.
- Paths can be icy; use provided walkways and follow guide instructions for the best and safest viewpoints.
- There is a visitor café and restroom facilities near the car park for a quick warm-up break.
Geothermal greenhouse & Icelandic horse stable visit
Visit a geothermal greenhouse to see tomato cultivation, followed by a short Icelandic horse farm visit to learn about the breed.
Tips from local experts:
- Greenhouses are warm and humid; bring a light layer you can remove when inside.
- At the horse farm, follow staff instructions around animals and avoid sudden movements; children should be supervised.
- This is a good opportunity for close-up photos of Icelandic horses — ask the guide for recommended viewpoints.
Evening Northern Lights search from rural Hella-area hotel
After check-in at the landhotel in Hella area, head out into the dark skies of rural South Iceland in search of the Northern Lights.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring insulated layers and warm boots for extended outdoor viewing in winter, and hand warmers if you have them.
- Turn off flash photography or use low-power settings to avoid disturbing other guests and preserve night vision.
- If you’re a couple seeking a private moment, ask the guide for quieter viewing spots a short walk from the bus.
Day 5
South coast highlights: Lava & Volcano Exhibition (Lava Centre), Skógar Folk Museum with turf houses, Skógafoss waterfall, black sand beach and bird cliffs at Reynisfjara. Overnight near Kirkjubæjarklaustur (Fosshótel Núpar area).
The Lava Centre (volcano & geology exhibition)
Interactive Lava Centre exhibits about Iceland’s volcanoes and earthquakes (short educational stop).
Tips from local experts:
- Allow 45–60 minutes to see main exhibits and short films on volcanic activity.
- Exhibition areas are indoors and heated — a comfortable place to warm up during a cold day.
- There is a cafe onsite for a snack; check opening hours in winter as they can vary seasonally.
Skógar Folk Museum & turf houses
Visit Skógar museum collections and adjacent traditional turf houses to learn about rural Icelandic life.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear footwear suitable for short outdoor walks between turf houses; paths can be uneven in winter.
- Indoor museum spaces provide historical context and restrooms; combine these with a hot drink break.
- Bring a camera for architectural details of turf houses — close-up shots work well in soft light.
Skógafoss waterfall visit
Short visit and photo stop at Skógafoss waterfall (60 m high). Option to use viewpoint near the base; stair access to the top is steep and may be icy.
Tips from local experts:
- Paths near the base can get spray-soaked and slippery; waterproof outer layers are helpful.
- If you prefer to avoid stairs in icy conditions, remain at the base viewpoint rather than ascending the stair path.
- There are small cafés/food trucks nearby some seasons; carry a small snack if you prefer not to queue for service.
Reynisfjara black sand beach & bird cliffs (Vík area)
Walk along the famous black sand beach and view the Reynisdrangar sea stacks and cliffs (observe safety warnings — powerful waves).
Tips from local experts:
- Observe posted safety warnings and keep well back from the water — sneaker waves make the beach dangerous.
- Windproof layers and sturdy footwear are recommended; the beach is exposed to strong Atlantic winds.
- Photography tip: stay well above the high-water line and watch waves closely while composing shots.
Evening arrival and Northern Lights search near Fosshótel Núpar area
Check in at accommodation near Kirkjubæjarklaustur; evening spent watching the skies away from light pollution.
Tips from local experts:
- Hotel arrival times may vary; leave outdoor clothing ready for a late-night aurora step-out if skies clear.
- Ask reception about the best nearby viewing directions based on local horizon and street lighting.
- If you have a late dinner plan, request an early tray or packed meal if aurora viewing is expected late.
Day 6
Glacier-focused day in Vatnajökull National Park: Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, Diamond Beach, Hof turf church and Skaftafell visitor area. Optional seasonal ice cave tour available (Oct–Apr). Evening film presentation about the Northern Lights.
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon visit
Visit the glacial lagoon with floating icebergs; time for shoreline photos and seal watching if present.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear layered, windproof clothing; the lagoon area is cold and can be windy year-round.
- Stick to designated viewing areas and paths; do not climb onto icebergs or enter the water.
- Binoculars are useful for spotting seals; check with the guide for suggested vantage points.
Diamond Beach (Breiðamerkursandur) walk
Short walk along the black sand where icebergs from Jökulsárlón strand and glisten like 'diamonds'.
Tips from local experts:
- Stay well away from the surf line; sneaker waves can sweep far up the beach unexpectedly.
- Bring gloves for handling small iceberg fragments for close-up photography; they are very cold.
- A short visit (20–40 minutes) is usually sufficient to see the best-placed ice before continuing the route.
Optional: Vatnajökull ice cave tour (seasonal: Oct–Apr)
Optional guided ice cave visits depart from the Jökulsárlón area when available (seasonal and weather dependent). This tour is run separately; guests who join will miss some later stops.
Tips from local experts:
- This activity is seasonal and depends on weather/conditions — confirm availability in advance and bring warm waterproof layers.
- Sturdy hiking boots and crampons are typically required for cave transfers and access; follow the operator’s packing list.
- If joining, inform the main guide at start of day; the rest of the group will continue the standard itinerary.
Hof turf church & Skaftafell (Vatnajökull National Park) visit
Stop at the small turf church at Hof and spend time at Skaftafell area of Vatnajökull National Park with short walks to viewpoints.
Tips from local experts:
- Turf church at Hof is small and fragile — observe signage and do not enter closed areas to protect the site.
- Skaftafell short walks can include uneven ground; use sensible footwear and watch for icy patches in winter.
- Visitor centre at Skaftafell provides maps and restroom facilities — a good place for a warming break.
Evening Northern Lights film presentation
Northern Lights Academy film presentation at the hotel to learn about aurora science and photography tips; then another evening search if skies permit.
Tips from local experts:
- Attend the evening film to refresh camera settings and aurora expectations before any late-night viewing.
- Charge phone and camera batteries during the film — cold conditions quickly reduce battery life outdoors.
- Plan for short night excursions; keep layers and footwear by the door to step outside quickly if aurora activity increases.
Day 7
Return west along the South Shore: Vík photo stop, Seljalandsfoss waterfall, and an afternoon soak at the Blue Lagoon before returning to Reykjavík for final night.
Vík photo stop & Reynisdrangar viewpoint
Short photo stop in Vík for village and coastline views (if not visited earlier) and a final coastline perspective.
Tips from local experts:
- Stay with the guide during short photo stops to keep to schedule and for parking/off-road safety.
- If you want souvenir shopping or a warm drink, note brief stop durations and plan quick purchases accordingly.
- Watch for icy sidewalks and vehicle traffic in winter; use designated parking and viewing areas for safety.
Seljalandsfoss waterfall stop
Visit Seljalandsfoss; path behind the cascade is scenic but may be closed in icy conditions — alternative viewpoints available.
Tips from local experts:
- If the path behind the waterfall is closed for safety in winter, enjoy the available frontal viewpoints instead.
- Wear slip-resistant shoes if you plan to approach viewpoints — paths can be very slippery when icy.
- Bring a waterproof cover for your camera or phone if you want to get closer to the waterfall spray.
Blue Lagoon visit (afternoon soak)
Afternoon entrance to the Blue Lagoon with towel usage included as part of the program; time to relax in geothermal seawater.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring swimwear and a change of clothes; lockers are available at the Blue Lagoon facilities for valuables and clothing.
- Avoid applying heavy lotions or makeup before entering the lagoon; silica can cling to skin and affect the water experience.
- Plan at least 1.5–2 hours for the Blue Lagoon visit to properly enjoy the pools and basic facilities included.
Return to Reykjavík and final evening
Drive back to Reykjavík, check in at Hotel Klettur and enjoy a final evening in the capital (tour concludes around 19:00).
Tips from local experts:
- Expect arrival back in Reykjavík around early evening; use this time for a relaxed dinner and a short city stroll.
- If you plan an evening aurora outing from Reykjavík, ask your guide about light pollution and recommended nearby dark spots.
- Confirm morning Flybus pick-up / departure instructions with hotel reception for your airport transfer on day 8.
Day 8
Departure day. Individual Flybus shuttle transfer from Reykjavík accommodation to Keflavík International Airport for onward flights. Breakfast included at the hotel.
Breakfast and check-out
Breakfast at the hotel followed by check-out. Confirm Flybus times and luggage arrangements with reception.
Tips from local experts:
- Confirm your Flybus departure time the evening before and leave luggage at reception if needed for a later shuttle.
- Pack a small personal bag with essentials and travel documents to have on hand at the transfer.
- Allow extra time for winter road conditions when planning your airport arrival time; follow Flybus instructions.
Individual Flybus shuttle to Keflavík International Airport (KEF)
Guests take the scheduled Flybus shuttle from Reykjavík to Keflavík International Airport to meet their departures.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive at the Flybus stop at least 10 minutes before the scheduled departure; buses follow strict timetables for airport connections.
- Keep passports and boarding passes accessible during transfer for quick airport check-in.
- In winter, expect the journey to take about 45–60 minutes depending on traffic and weather; plan accordingly.
