Itinerary
Day 1
Evening Northern Lights hunt departing from Reykjavík. The group meets at Skúlagata 8 (or is collected from accommodation if pick-up requested). The route and final viewing site will depend on cloud cover and local forecasts.
Meeting point / Pick-up
Meet at the bus stop in front of the car park at Skúlagata 8, 101 Reykjavík. If you requested pickup and it is possible, the guide will meet you directly in front of your accommodation. After everyone is aboard we depart Reykjavík and drive to a dark-sky location.
Tips from local experts:
- Be ready 5–10 minutes before the scheduled meeting time; pickups may require a short walking meeting if vehicle access is limited.
- Bring warm layers and sturdy shoes—you’ll wait outside during transfers and at viewing stops.
- If you requested pickup, have your phone available and check SMS in case the driver messages an exact pickup time.
Drive to dark-sky location
Travel from Reykjavík into less light-polluted areas chosen by the guide based on that day's cloud maps and Kp index. Travel time varies by final location; this block accounts for the outward transfer.
Tips from local experts:
- Expect the first 45–75 minutes to be spent in the vehicle while heading to the best available viewing area.
- Keep a small bag with a warm hat and gloves accessible—you may step outside quickly at stops.
- Restrooms are available before departure; facilities will be limited once en route.
Science of the Northern Lights
On arrival, your guide will explain the science behind auroras—how solar activity and Earth’s magnetic field create the lights—and describe how local forecasts and the Kp index inform site choice.
Tips from local experts:
- Ask questions about how the Kp index and cloud maps are used—the guide uses these to choose the best viewing spot each night.
- If you’re prone to cold, put on an extra layer before listening; explanations are typically given standing outdoors.
- Bring a small flashlight with a red filter or use your phone’s red-light setting to preserve night vision during the talk.
Northern Lights Photography
The guide will cover practical long-exposure photography techniques tailored to the gear guests have (camera or smartphone), including recommended settings, tripod use, and composition tips for aurora shots.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring a tripod for best results; if you don’t have one, stabilize your camera/phone on a backpack or flat surface.
- Turn off flash and enable long-exposure or manual mode; the guide will suggest aperture and shutter-speed ranges.
- Keep spare batteries warm in an inside pocket—cold drains battery life quickly during night shoots.
Northern Lights Hunt (observing)
Spend the main observing period outside watching for the Aurora Borealis. Guides will relocate locally if needed to find clearer skies and will advise on safe and comfortable viewing practices.
Tips from local experts:
- Dress in insulated layers and use the provided blankets during long observation periods.
- Stay with the group and follow the guide’s safety instructions—terrain may be uneven and dark.
- Avoid bright screens and white lights to preserve night vision; use red light if necessary to check camera settings.
Drive back to Reykjavik / Drop-off
Return drive to Reykjavík. The group is dropped back at the original meeting point (Skúlagata 8) and passengers who requested drop-off will be taken to their accommodations where possible.
Tips from local experts:
- Expect a vehicle return time—keep belongings with you; the guide will confirm approximate drop-off locations before departure.
- If you requested a drop-off to an address, have the full address visible in your booking and keep your phone on for driver contact.
- Warm up with an extra layer during the drive; the vehicle may be warm but doors open frequently for passenger drop-offs.
