Meet & check-in at Scandinavian Travel Group / Safarimarket (Sirkka)
Group meets at the Safarimarket check-in desk for registration, final safety briefing and (optional) clothing pick-up if arranged. Please arrive on time to keep the schedule for transfers.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 10–15 minutes before the scheduled start to complete sign-in and, if needed, collect rented winter clothing only available at this location.
- Safarimarket (Keskuskuja 2 B 3, Sirkka) has public restrooms—use them before departure for the 30-minute transfer.
- Bring small snacks and a refillable water bottle for children; keep valuables in a zipped bag during transfers and activities.
Transfer by minivan to the kennel (Tepasto)
Short transfer (approx. 30 minutes) north of Levi to the family-owned Lapland Wild Witch husky kennel in Tepasto.
Tips from local experts:
- The drive takes about 30 minutes; secure car seats for small children in advance if required and inform staff when booking.
- Dress warmly for stepping out at the kennel—layers and waterproof outerwear work best for children in winter conditions.
- Keep a small camera or phone ready for first dog sightings; avoid dangling straps around dogs for safety.
Kennel briefing & meet the dogs
Host introduces the kennel, dog breeds and life at the kennel. Short safety briefing and demonstration of driving (mushing) the sleds before heading to the start.
Tips from local experts:
- Supervise young children closely around dogs and follow the host's safety instructions at all times.
- Ask the host about swapping mushers during the stop-over if you want children to experience both riding and standing on the sled.
- Remove or secure loose scarves and hoods; keep hands flat when approaching dogs to avoid accidental nips.
Self-guided husky safari — 5 km (approx. 20–30 min riding time)
You drive your own sled (mushing) along a partly forested track and partly across a frozen river. The ride includes a stop-over where musher and passenger may swap.
Tips from local experts:
- Children under 7 should ride seated as described by the host; final seating decisions are made on-site for safety—confirm with the host before starting.
- Expect a ride time of 20–30 minutes; the pace can vary with weather and trail conditions, and stops are included for swapping and photos.
- Wear waterproof gloves and sturdy boots; keep phones and cameras in a warm inner pocket to preserve battery life in cold temperatures.
Post-ride kennel time: photos, cuddles and kota warm-up
After the ride, spend time thanking the dogs, visit the running area to meet other dogs, take photos and warm up inside the cozy kota around an open fire with hot berry juice and cookies while the host answers questions.
Tips from local experts:
- Keep an eye on children near the open fire in the kota; the host will manage seating and safety around the hearth.
- If anyone has allergies, notify the host before enjoying refreshments—hot berry juice and cookies are provided but ingredients may vary.
- Use this time to charge small devices briefly in warm pockets and dry any snow from gloves or boots to avoid cold hands.
Return transfer to Safarimarket (Sirkka) and drop-off
Short transfer back to the Safarimarket meeting point in Sirkka where the program concludes. Allow a few minutes to gather personal items and say goodbyes.
Tips from local experts:
- Confirm any belongings (gloves, hats, cameras) before leaving the vehicle—check under seats and floor areas.
- If you rented winter clothing at Safarimarket, return it there following the host's instructions; rentals are only available at that pickup location.
- If you need immediate restroom or snack stops on return, ask the driver to allow a short pause in Sirkka before final drop-off.
