Private small-group visit to a local reindeer farm near Levi. Itinerary
Day 1
Three-hour guided experience: meet at the Scandinavian Travel Group safarimarket in Sirkka, get dressed in warm gear, transfer by car to sled pickup, short sled ride to the reindeer enclosure, one hour working with and feeding reindeer, kota lunch and storytelling, lasso practice and return transfer to Levi.
Meet at Scandinavian Travel Group / Safarimarket – kit up
Arrive at the meeting point to sign in, receive warm winter clothing and helmets (Finnish law requires helmets for sled rides). Guides will brief the group and explain safety rules and interaction etiquette with semi-wild reindeer.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive at least 20 minutes before the scheduled start time to get dressed and receive helmets (company policy).
- Bring thin inner layers and waterproof gloves if you have them; outer clothing is provided but layering helps children stay comfortable.
- Keep cameras/phones in an easily accessible pocket — you’ll want them ready but secure during transfers and sled segments.
Transfer by car/minibus to sled pickup point (short drive)
A short transfer from the safarimarket to the sled pickup location just outside Levi centre. Bags stay on the vehicle; you will change into the sled at the pickup point.

- Expect a brief 5–10 minute drive; keep small children seated and buckled during the transfer.
- Bring any necessary child-care items (nappies/snacks) in a small bag you can keep with you on the sled transfer.
- If snow is missing, this transfer will be by bus as the sled is not used; guides will inform you at pickup.
Sled ride pulled by snowmobile to the reindeer enclosure
Change from vehicle to sled and take a roughly 15-minute sled ride across Lappish bogs and forest tracks to the reindeer enclosure. Part of the route crosses private land where your group will be exclusive visitors.
Tips from local experts:
- Finnish law requires helmets for sled passengers — ensure children’s helmets are fitted snugly by the guide.
- Keep hands and feet inside the sled and remain seated during the ride for safety and comfort.
- If you’re prone to cold, bring a hand warmer; the sled ride is short but exposed to wind chill.
Meet the reindeer & feed at several feeding locations
Guided walk through the reindeer enclosure and feeding areas. You will be given hay and pellets to feed the herds while the herder explains reindeer husbandry and seasonal routines. Interaction time is approx. one hour.

- Supervise children closely: reindeer are semi-wild and can be shy or move unpredictably near the group.
- Do not chase or corner animals; follow the guide’s instructions on how to present food and where to stand for photos.
- Keep phones/cameras on a strap or secure pocket — reindeer may nudge or brush past you during feeding.
Lunch in the kota (warm hut) — open-fire coffee, reindeer sausage & pancakes
Move indoors to the kota for warmth. Sit on benches with reindeer skins near the open fire while the chef serves hot drinks, grilled reindeer sausage (other options on request), pancakes with local berry jam and whipped cream, and marshmallows for toasting.

- Inform the guide of any allergies or dietary restrictions before the trip so alternatives can be prepared.
- Children will warm up quickly inside the kota; bring a small extra layer if they need it after being outside.
- Hot drinks are served from the open fire — supervise children around the fire and hot cooking areas.
Lasso throwing practice and diploma ceremony
After lunch, practice lasso throwing outside the kota under the guide’s supervision. Each participant receives a personal diploma of reindeer herder’s assistant.

- Listen to the safety briefing before trying the lasso; keep a safe distance while others are practicing.
- This activity is playful but outdoors — keep hats and mittens handy for quick re-warming between attempts.
- Collect the diploma at the end of the session and keep it in a dry pocket or bag to avoid moisture.
Return transfer to Levi (drop-off at Scandinavian Travel Group / Safarimarket)
Board the vehicle for the drive back to Levi. Drop-off is at the original meeting point or a nearby agreed location in Levi.

- Keep any belongings collected during the visit together so nothing is left behind at the farm.
- If your child fell asleep during the program, the vehicle is suitable for short transfers — bring a light blanket if needed.
- Confirm your preferred drop-off point with the guide if you need a different location in Levi; otherwise you will be returned to the safarimarket.
