Itinerary
Day 1
Pickup from Reykjavik hotels or Keflavik Airport (confirm exact location and preferred pickup time when booking). The timed activities below show arrival and departure windows at each Golden Circle stop; travel and short comfort breaks are included between stops.
Þingvellir National Park (Þingvellir)
Experience the site of the ancient Icelandic parliament and the stunning rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear a windproof layer and sturdy shoes — paths include uneven rock and boardwalk sections.
- Visitors’ facilities (visitor centre and toilets) are located near the main car park; plan short restroom breaks before the rim walks.
- For best photos of the rift and Öxarárfoss area, walk the designated trails and avoid stepping off marked paths; sunrise/sunset give softer light.
Geysir Geothermal Area (Strokkur)
Watch the eruptive Strokkur geyser, which spouts water up to ~30 meters every few minutes, and explore the surrounding geothermal landscape.
Tips from local experts:
- Stay on marked boardwalks and viewing platforms — ground is hot and fragile in the geothermal area.
- Bring a jacket; steam and wind make the area feel colder than open fields nearby.
- Good photo angles are from the main viewing area facing Strokkur; keep a small distance as eruptions are sudden.
Gullfoss Waterfall
Visit one of Iceland’s most beautiful and powerful waterfalls, with opportunities for stunning photographs and an optional short walk on well-marked paths to multiple viewpoints.
Tips from local experts:
- Use the lower and upper viewing platforms for varied perspectives — the lower platform can be windy and sprayy, so protect cameras.
- There are steps and some uneven surfaces to reach viewpoints; take care in wet conditions.
- There is a visitor area with toilets and shelter near the car park; allow a few extra minutes for photos and to take in the views.
Kerið Crater (Kerið)
Explore the vividly colored Kerið crater, a volcanic caldera with a deep blue lake surrounded by steep red and brown lava rock walls. Entry fee to Kerið is included.
Tips from local experts:
- A short path runs around the rim; parts are uneven and slightly steep — comfortable footwear recommended.
- The site has a small ticket booth/entrance point; your Kerið entry is covered with this tour but keep your booking confirmation available if needed.
- For a quieter visit, take photos from the rim looking down to the lake; avoid the inner slope if wet as it becomes slippery.
